A Shift in Focus for Healthy Schools New York

Due to a change in emphasis at the state level, the Healthy Schools New York initiative is now focusing its attention on supporting school districts as they assess their Health and Wellness Policies for Physical Education and Physical Activities.

Healthy Schools New York continues its commitment to helping school districts provide healthy school environments and quality physical education to students. The initiative provides technical assistance and resources to priority school districts throughout the state.

    Goal
To ensure that all students in elementary grades K-6 engage in 120 minutes per week of quality physical education and have opportunities to participate in additional physical activity before, during, or after the school day.

    Objectives
    1. To establish an ongoing process for developing, implementing and evaluating:
    a. A Physical Education (PE) Plan
    b. Policies to increase physical activity before, during, and after the school day
    2. To improve the comprehensiveness and strength of Local Wellness Policies for Physical Education and Physical Activity.
