ROLE OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR:

The role of the school counselor is closely aligned with the philosophy of the middle school model, which is practiced at Onteora. We focus on the whole child.  Our primary responsibility is to assist students as they continue to develop and grow socially, emotionally, and academically.  In order to best help our students meet the challenges that they can expect to face during their middle school years, we offer a variety of counseling services ranging from: individual counseling; group counseling; classroom-based career guidance; parent conferences; student/parent conferences; student/teacher conferences and referral to additional support services/programs available at O.M.S.

WHEN YOUR CHILD SHOULD EXPECT TO SEE THEIR COUNSELOR?:

At least two individual appointments each year.

       Classroom lessons on career development.

Schedule planning for the following school year.

As needed to assist with problems as they arise.

HOW TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR CHILD'S GUIDANCE COUNSELOR:

Please call Lolly Adler or Elaine Ostrander, Guidance Secretaries, to schedule a mutually convenient meeting time (657-2373).

HOW TO SCHEDULE A TEAM MEETING:

Please call Fran Hollander in the Middle School Office to schedule an appointment with your child's team of teachers.  Your child's guidance counselor attends most team meetings.  However, if you'd like, you can make a specific request to have the counselor attend.
