The Onteora Central School District Board of Education has unanimously approved a resolution requesting a recount of ballots cast in the 2022-2023 Budget Vote and Election to determine the winner of the third open Board seat. The resolution was passed at the Special Board Meeting held on May 27.
At the conclusion of the vote on May 17, the District determined that there had been an error in counting a handful of ballots at two polling sites. Since the number of ballots in question could affect which candidate wins the third seat, the District wants to ensure the votes are properly tallied. Under the Education Law, the District is not permitted to recount the ballots. Once the ballots are sealed at the end of the night, only the Commissioner of Education can order a recount of the ballots.
The resolution is as follows:
BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education hereby authorizes an action to be filed with the Commissioner of Education requesting a recount of the ballots in the May 17, 2022 Annual Budget Vote and Election.
