Onteora High School Named #1 in Ulster County by U.S. News & World Report

Onteora High School (OHS) has been ranked the top school in the Kingston metropolitan area by U.S. News & World Report  for 2026-2027. The ranking is based on several key measures of student achievement, including graduation rates and state-required test scores.

“We are excited to see the hard work and dedication of our students and the commitment of our entire school community publicly recognized in this way,” said Onteora Superintendent of Schools Victoria McLaren. “We are incredibly proud of our students and grateful to the educators and families who help them achieve their goals.”

OHS was also ranked 197 out of 1,232 schools in the State Assessment Proficiency category based on aggregated scores in math, reading, and science state assessments. This achievement, suggested McLaren, underscores Onteora High School’s commitment to providing students with a strong academic foundation and the skills they need to be successful after graduation.

Beyond academic achievement, she added, OHS provides students with opportunities to explore their interests, challenge themselves, and prepare for their next steps through a wide range of courses, programs, extracurricular activities, and experiences.

According to Onteora, the U.S. News & World Report recognition can be attributed to the collective efforts of the entire Onteora community and its continued commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences that help every student grow and succeed.

“This recognition is a reflection of the incredible work happening each day at Onteora High School,” said High School Principal Lance Edelman. “Our students continue to challenge themselves and grow, supported by dedicated educators, staff, families, and a community that believes deeply in their success. We are incredibly proud of this achievement and of the many ways our students continue to demonstrate what makes Onteora such a special place to learn.”
