Onteora’s 2024 MHAL Recipients Named

We are excited to announce that Ava Lamb and James Lynch have been named the 2024 Mid-Hudson Athletic League (MHAL) Senior Scholar-Athlete Award recipients from Onteora High School. The awards, which are given to two students from each school in the League, are based on academic merit and athletic performance.

Ava, who ranks number five in her class, is on the Varsity swimming team and the Varsity basketball team and has served as captain of both. In addition, she earned varsity letters in both sports.

Ava is a member of the Athletic Council, The National Honor Society, the High School Orchestra, and the Belleayre Bash Committee (a graduation party for seniors). Outside of school, Ava has participated in many community service activities, including assembling holiday food baskets, running basketball clinics for younger students, and volunteering at the Bike for Cancer fundraiser.

In the fall, Ava will be attending the University of Michigan.

James, who ranks seventh in his class, is on the Varsity soccer and tennis teams, and has been a team captain of both. He has played 1st singles tennis since freshman year, and has qualified for the MHAL and Section IX Tennis Tournament. In 2022, James earned the Coach’s Award for both soccer and tennis.

James is co-president of the National Honor Society and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). He earned second place in the New York State DECA Regional 3 and qualified for the DECA State competition. He is a College Board AP Scholar, and participated in the Economics for Leaders program. James is a first chair trumpet in the High School's Wind Ensemble and lead trumpet in Jazz Ensemble, and has performed in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Area All-State Symphonic Band and All-County Jazz Ensemble.

James has been involved in various volunteer work, both in school and in the community, including food drives, highway clean-ups, and the Red Cross blood drive. He volunteers at the West Hurley Library and the Esopus Creek Conservancy. In addition, he tutors fellow students, and has served as assistant coach for the Onteora Middle School soccer team.

In the fall, James will be attending Cornell University, at the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management.
