The Committee on Special Education (CSE),                                                                                

Appointed by the Board of Education is responsible for:
Identifying school age children (ages 5-21) with disabilities
Arranging for the delivery of special education services

Committee Members (at minimum):

Special education representative from the school district who serves as chairperson
A parent of a preschool or elementary aged child with a disability who resides in the school district (parent member)
Professionals who participated in the evaluation of the child
The child’s teacher

Who Can Refer?
Parent or person in parental relationship
Licensed physician
Professional staff members of
an Early Childhood Direction Center
an approved preschool program
early intervention programs

Why Refer?
If you suspect development problems or delays in the areas of:
speech/language skills
motor skills
social emotional development
cognitive/learning skills
physical development
sensory impairment (i.e. hearing, vision)

What is the CSE Process?

Contacting the PPS Director and completing a request for an evaluation to determine child’s strengths and areas of need

Evaluation components
Social history to obtain developmental history
Physical:  information to be gathered from your child’s physician regarding health, vision, hearing and immunization records
Psychological:  to determine learning potential as well as educational strengths and needs
Other testing related to expressed areas of concern (i.e. speech/language evaluation)

A meeting within 60 days of signed consent to review the results of evaluation.  If child is found to be eligible for services, he/she will be classified, and  an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) will be prepared to implement any recommended services.

If not, the reports will be used to provide suggestions to the parent(s) for improving the child’s learning.
